Recently, Blue Cross of California, and its parent company WellPoint Inc., has come under investigation for rescinding health insurance policies of individuals who have filed large health insurance claims.

Lawsuits filed by both individuals and hospitals against Blue Cross state that the health insurance provider performs the illegal practice of "post-claims underwriting." Not only does Blue Cross refuse to pay for large medical procedures and treatment, they drop policyholders from Blue Cross insurance only after the medical claim has been filed.

Once the individuals have begun their treatment or received their procedure, Blue Cross receives the medical bills they are supposed to cover. For some large medical bills, Blue Cross has simply chosen to refuse to pay and drop the policyholder from Blue Cross health insurance.

This has forced some patients to cover massive medical bills alone, because Blue Cross has refused to uphold their insurance. In some cases, hospitals have even been forced to write off hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills, because their patients are unable to pay for their treatments or procedures.

The Blue Cross lawsuits allege that the company had an entire "retroactive review department." This department would wait for large claims to be filed and then look for reasons to drop policyholders, stranding them or their hospital with huge medical bills.

Some of the California hospitals affected by Blue Cross and their faulty insurance practices, include:

  1. Long Beach Memorial Hospital
  2. Miller Children's Hospital
  3. Anaheim Memorial Medical Center
  4. Saddleback Memorial Medical Center
  5. Orange Coast Memorial Hospital
